Metamorphic Petrologist with SEM experience
About the role
We work at the intersections of geology, environmental health, and building chemistry. The focus is asbestos and heavy-metal analysis: you take samples in the field (gravel, grit, plasters, adhesives, sealants), analyse them by SEM/EDX, interpret the results and document them. The larger part of the work takes place in the lab: SEM analysis, sample preparation, instrument maintenance, method development, technical repairs. The current main topic (as of May 2026) is the Burgenland asbestos case (see /en/asbestos-burgenland/).
A typical month
Roughly: 30 per cent field sampling (site inspections, quarry visits, material collection), 70 per cent lab work (SEM/EDX analysis, sample preparation, method development, instrument maintenance, tinkering). These are guidelines, not commitments; the mix shifts with the project phase.
Compensation
Base salary plus monthly profit share. Full-time, permanent.
Who we are
Two managing directors. Maximilian Mandl (geochemist, PhD ETH Zurich) leads the scientific direction and the Austrian company Ungiftig FlexCo in Neunkirchen. Philipp Schlier runs the German affiliate Ungiftig UG (haftungsbeschraenkt) in Passau. Flat hierarchy, short decision paths, clear ownership per role.
What we look for
Someone equally happy at the SEM screen and in a quarry. The job is scientific and technical; we pull cores, prepare samples, repair instruments and write analysis scripts. If that sounds like fun, we should talk.
Requirements
- Experience with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), ideally coupled with EDX
- Driving licence (essential; regular field work, often at remote quarry sites)
- Technically curious, hands-on mentality, tinkerer character (we build a lot ourselves, from sampling setups to analysis scripts)
Nice to have
- Background in metamorphic petrology, preferably Eastern Alps geology
- Experience with asbestos analysis (VDI 3866 Sheet 5, TRGS 517) is a plus
- Mineral optics, polarisation microscopy
- Python for data analysis
